To call the Marlin 336 the most iconic deer rifle of all time, though hyperbolic, would not in any way be overstated. It really is. This lever action rifle, particularly in .30-30 Winchester, has probably taken more deer across the country (mostly in the eastern half, admittedly) than any other platform and cartridge combo. 

But could the rifle be better? As with literally any firearm platform, the answer is a resounding yes, especially on a lever-action that’s as (if you can excuse it) basic, even dated, as this one.

Not that there’s anything wrong with the beautiful hardwood stock that comes with the 336 from the factory, but it could also be way better than it is.
