Why Wood and Aluminum WOOX Stocks Are Better Than Full Wood (or All-Synthetic) Rifle Stocks

Why Wood and Aluminum WOOX Stocks Are Better Than Full Wood (or All-Synthetic) Rifle Stocks

Wood rifle stocks are beautiful and classic, but they deteriorate with exposure to sunlight and humidity, and they warp in response to changes in temperature and pressure. Worse yet, they rarely offer any adjustability and few to no attachment points for shooting accessories.

Aluminum and synthetic rifle stocks, including polymer and fiberglass rifle stocks, may be light and strong, but they offer the aesthetic of wood - along with a few other shortcomings.

WOOX stocks, which are hybrid rifle stocks made with aluminum and wood, solve all of these problems while preserving the relevant attributes of each. Here’s what they offer - and why they’re among the best in the industry.

Aluminum Is Lighter Than Wood

The crazy thing about aluminum is that, despite the fact that it’s a metal and comes with all of the relative advantages that metal offers, it’s crazy light. Lighter than many species of wood, and lighter than all of those commonly used to construct rifle stocks. So by investing in a WOOX stock for your favorite rifle, you might actually be lightening the build significantly.

Aluminum Is Stronger Than Wood

Some woods are very, very strong. But even they lack the strength of aluminum. This is a serious benefit when paired with the fact that aluminum is lighter - you get twice the bang for your buck, shaving off ounces while actually improving strength.

Hybrid Wood Construction Preserves Some of the Aesthetics

As redeeming as aluminum is, it does in a certain respect lack some of the redeeming aesthetics of wood. Therefore, WOOX has made its stocks hybrid models. They are both aluminum and hardwood, offering up the benefits of aluminum while keeping some of the beauty of wooden rifle stock construction intact.

Aluminum Is Less Moody

If wood is kept in chronically wet conditions, it will grow mold and rot. If wood is kept in chronically dry conditions, it can still rot - dry rot. If you leave wood in the sun, it will turn gray and start to crack and disintegrate in response to ultraviolet light exposure.

For better or worse, despite its beauty, wood is a natural organic material and there are a million and one ways for it to break down. This is a shame, considering the expense of it. Wood requires a lot of care and attention.

Aluminum, not so much. Actually, aluminum requires virtually no maintenance and is a lot more corrosion resistant than steel. That means that, while it’s nice to keep an aluminum stock clean, the whole world isn’t going to fall apart if you don’t.

No Changes in Response to Atmospheric Shifts

Another problem with wood is (again, despite its timeless appeal and classic beauty) that when the temperature shifts, or worse, when the atmospheric moisture concentration changes, the wood will change its dimensions.

Wood swells when it’s hot and wet and shrinks and warps when it’s cold and dry. Neither of these things, nor any combination of them, is good. Changing stock dimensions change the nature of the barrel bedding, throwing accuracy off, and in some cases, not by a little.

This categorically makes wood rifle stocks inferior to synthetic stocks because the latter are more stable and do not change in responses to temperature and humidity shifts.

WOOX gun stocks, despite the fact that they sport wooden ornamentation and furniture, fall in that category. They offer exact performance and precise consistency and do not change with changes in the weather.

In short, WOOX stocks, like other synthetic rifle stocks, both enable and uphold a higher degree of accuracy.

Better Adjustability

Not all synthetic stocks, but many (WOOX stocks included) offer great adjustability to fit the shooter, which also upholds a high degree of accuracy, since fit directly impacts handling and proficiency.

Many WOOX stocks are not simply adjustable for comb height (which impacts eye relief and more) but also for length of pull (or LOP) which are both critical indicators of how well a platform will fit its shooter.

Attachment Points

Most wooden rifle stocks and many synthetic stocks just don’t offer any attachment points beyond studs or sling swivel mounts. That’s better than nothing, but not by much.

WOOX stocks frequently boast not only M-LOK slots along the forend and sometimes on the stock, but also Picatinny rail sections that are compatible with a wide range of shooting accessories that can improve handling, customization, and much more - once again improving the value of these hybrid stocks.
